A domino set, often referred to as a deck or pack, typically consists of 28 tiles, known colloquially as bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. The traditional Sino-European set is the most common, but extended sets like double 9 and double 12 are used for games such as Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Each country has its own favorite domino games: England enjoys Muggins (All Fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican Train, and Spain plays Matador.

The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game reaching Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a fascinating mystery.

Here are the general rules for playing dominoes:

Blocking Game

The simplest variant is for two players using a double six set. Players draw seven tiles from the shuffled stock or boneyard, with the remainder unused. Tiles are placed on-edge, visible only to their owner. The game starts with one player laying down a tile, which varies by game: in Muggins, it's the highest double (6-6); in Bergen, it's 0-0; and in Mexican Train, it's the next lower double each round. Players take turns extending the line of play by matching values. The game ends when a player plays their last tile or when the game is blocked, with the winner being the one who caused the block.

Scoring Game

Points are scored for specific configurations or moves. In Muggins (All Fives), points are awarded when the open ends sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, points are scored when the open ends match. In Mexican Train, the double zero domino scores 50 points. If a player fails to call "domino" before laying a tile and another player calls it afterward, the first player must draw an extra tile.

Draw Game

In the draw game, players can draw from the stock before playing a tile. The game's score is calculated from the pips in the losing player's hand and the stock, typically leaving two tiles in the stock. This variant is often simply called "dominos."

Mexican Train has arrived in our app! Enjoy a full set of this exciting game variety. You can play dominoes online, including Draw game, Block game, and Muggins (All Fives), for free!
