The Hang is a captivating musical instrument within the idiophone class, crafted in the scenic landscapes of Switzerland. Known also as the handpan, this instrument presents a unique 'UFO shape' formed by two meticulously crafted half-shells of deep drawn, nitrided steel sheet, seamlessly glued at the rim to create a hollow interior.
The top side of the Hang, affectionately called the "Ding," features a central 'note' and is surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields,' each meticulously hammered into place. On the flip side, the "Gu," you'll find a plain surface with a rolled hole at its center, which, when struck at the rim, produces a tuned note, adding to the instrument's enchanting sound palette.
Drawing inspiration from the steelpan, the Hang operates on similar physical principles but with a twist, functioning as a Helmholtz resonator. This innovative design is the culmination of extensive research into the steelpan and other instruments, showcasing the dedication of its creators to musical exploration.
