Designing Absolute Batman
The Absolute Universe's Batman is an awe-inspiring presence, characterized by his muscular build, shoulder spikes, and an array of enhancements to the classic Batsuit. This design earned him a spot among the 10 greatest Batman costumes of all time. Snyder and Dragotta discussed how they envisioned this larger-than-life Batman, focusing on a character who lacks the traditional wealth and resources.
"Scott's vision was to make him huge," Dragotta shared with IGN. "He wanted the biggest Batman we've ever seen. Initially, I drew him quite large, but Scott pushed for even more. We ended up with proportions reminiscent of the Hulk."
Dragotta elaborated, "The design embodies the essence of who this Batman is—every part of his suit is a weapon. It's not just a utility belt anymore; his entire outfit is a utility. This approach continues to shape and evolve the design."
"For Snyder, size was crucial. In the classic Batman universe, wealth acts as a superpower. Without those financial resources, this Batman compensates with sheer physical presence.
"When the classic Batman appears, his intimidation comes from his fighting skills, detective prowess, and theatrics, but also from his wealth," Snyder explained. "He arrives in high-tech vehicles and suits that signal his superiority. In contrast, this Batman's intimidation stems from his size, his physicality, and the threat his suit represents. He's a force to be reckoned with, even against well-resourced villains like Black Mask."

The bulky, musclebound Batman of Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns inspired aspects of Absolute Batman. Dragotta paid homage to Miller's iconic work in issue #6, reimagining the famous cover of Batman leaping against a lightning bolt.
"Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Batman from Year One is a huge influence," Dragotta noted. "Their storytelling and layout are inspiring. The homage to Dark Knight Returns felt essential."
Giving Batman a Family
Absolute Batman introduces significant changes to Batman's lore, notably the revelation that his mother, Martha, is alive. This alters the traditional narrative of Batman as a solitary figure, adding a new layer of vulnerability and complexity.
"The decision to keep Martha alive was pivotal," Snyder admitted. "It shifts the dynamic from the paternal focus on Thomas to a more maternal influence. As we developed the story, Martha became the moral compass of the series, grounding Bruce while exposing his vulnerabilities."

Another fundamental change introduced early on is Bruce's childhood friendships with future villains like Waylon Jones, Oswald Cobblepot, Harvey Dent, Edward Nygma, and Selina Kyle. These relationships form an extended family that influences his journey to becoming Batman.
"Without global training, who does Bruce learn from?" Snyder posed. "In the upcoming issues, we'll see how Oswald, Waylon, Eddie, Harvey, and Selina shaped his understanding of Gotham's underworld, combat, logic, politics, and more. These friendships are central to the series, adding depth and emotional stakes to Batman's story."

Absolute Batman vs. Absolute Black Mask
In "The Zoo," Absolute Batman confronts a new generation of villains, with Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask, taking center stage. Sionis leads the Party Animals, a gang reveling in nihilism as Gotham burns.
"Black Mask was the perfect fit for this arc," Snyder said. "His skull-like mask and nihilistic outlook align with our theme of a world past the point of no return. We reshaped him to fit our narrative while staying true to his core as a crime boss."

The confrontation between Batman and Black Mask escalates in issue #6, culminating in a brutal fight on Sionis' yacht. Batman's victory over Black Mask, without crossing the line into murder, underscores his determination and resilience.
"Those lines weren't originally planned," Snyder revealed about Batman's dialogue during the fight. "But they encapsulate his spirit—using doubt and disbelief as fuel to push forward, even in the darkest moments."
The Threat of Absolute Joker
Joker, the antithesis of Batman, looms large in the Absolute Universe. Introduced at the end of issue #1, Absolute Joker possesses the wealth and training traditionally associated with Batman, but he never laughs.

"The Joker is the system in this inverted world," Snyder explained. "Their dynamic is always at opposite ends of the spectrum. This Joker is already a terrifying force before he meets Batman, and their relationship will evolve significantly."
Dragotta added, "Joker's been established and powerful. We've planted clues about his influence through JK Industries and the Arks. His storyline will unfold soon, and the anticipation is part of the thrill."
What to Expect From Absolute Mr. Freeze and Absolute Bane
Issues #7 and #8 introduce Mr. Freeze, with artist Marcos Martin bringing a horror-infused take on the character. Snyder praised Martin's focus on the emotional core of the story, paralleling Bruce's struggles with those of Mr. Freeze.

"Mr. Freeze's dark path mirrors Bruce's challenges," Snyder said. "We're pushing boundaries with this twisted version of him, embracing the freedom of our creator-owned universe."
As for Bane, Snyder teased, "He's big—really big. We wanted someone who would make Bruce's silhouette look smaller."
Finally, Snyder hinted at broader interactions within the Absolute Universe as it expands in 2025. "Bruce is aware of events in other parts of our world," he said. "We're planning how these characters will affect each other, setting the stage for exciting developments."
