Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 was officially unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, accompanied by a cinematic trailer that sets the tone for what promises to be a gripping new chapter in the iconic franchise. Developed collaboratively by Treyarch and Raven Software, this title marks a historic moment as the first consecutive release within the *Black Ops* sub-series.
Matt Cox, General Manager of Call of Duty, emphasized the creative vision behind the decision: “As a team, our goal from the outset was to craft a back-to-back series experience that truly honors the distinct identity of the Black Ops universe.”
While no official release date has been revealed yet, fans were given a glimpse into the game’s storyline through the official description:
“Wielding cutting-edge technology, David Mason and his elite team must rise against a cunning enemy who uses fear as their ultimate weapon.”
Set in the year 2035—over four decades after the events of *Black Ops 6*—the game unfolds during a period of global instability triggered by the aftermath of *Black Ops 2* and last year’s *Black Ops 6*. Players can look forward to an intense co-op campaign (which returns after being absent in *Black Ops 6*, though solo play remains available), near-future weaponry in multiplayer combat, and a brand-new set of maps designed specifically for competitive gameplay. Additionally, the next evolution of Round-Based Zombies will take players deep into the heart of the mysterious Dark Aether.
According to Variety, the game features performances from well-known actors including Milo Ventimiglia as David Mason, Kiernan Shipka portraying Emma Kagen, and Michael Rooker reprising his role as Mike Harper—a character originally introduced in *Black Ops 2*.
While some may view the rapid follow-up to *Black Ops 6* as a placeholder release—similar to how *Modern Warfare 3* was perceived following *Modern Warfare 2*—Cox reassured fans that *Black Ops 7* is a full-featured entry in the franchise: “This game delivers the complete Call of Duty experience, and we’re excited to share more details with the community later this summer.”
Tyler Bahl, Head of Activision Publishing Marketing, added context on the decision to continue the *Black Ops* narrative so soon: “The team is capitalizing on the strong momentum and enthusiasm surrounding the Black Ops universe. This is the first time we're staying within the series for consecutive releases, giving players more time to enjoy live content across *Black Ops 6* and *Call of Duty: Warzone* before transitioning to *Black Ops 7*.
“Our teaser offers a taste of the intense storytelling players can expect, and developing two Black Ops titles back-to-back gives us a unique opportunity to explore both creative depth and the dramatic shift from a ’90s setting to the futuristic world of 2035 in our marketing approach.”
In terms of platform availability, Activision confirmed that *Black Ops 7* will support last-generation consoles, launching on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Xbox PC, Battle.net, and Steam. As expected, Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers will have access to the game on day one. Notably, there was no mention of a Nintendo Switch 2 version during the announcement.
