Chris Evans, known for his iconic role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly stated that he will not be returning to the MCU for the upcoming film "Avengers: Doomsday" or any other projects. This clarification came in response to a report by Deadline, which suggested that Evans would rejoin the franchise alongside Robert Downey Jr., another original Avenger. Speaking to Esquire, Evans debunked the rumor, saying, "That's not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years, ever since Endgame. I've just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."

The confusion arose after Anthony Mackie, who assumed the Captain America mantle following Evans' character's retirement in "Avengers: Endgame," mentioned to Esquire that he was told by his manager that Evans would return. However, Mackie later spoke directly with Evans, who confirmed his retirement. "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then," Mackie said. "At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired'."

While Evans has not returned to the MCU as Captain America, he did reprise his role as Johnny Storm from the Fox universe in "Deadpool & Wolverine." This cameo was more of a comedic side role, distinct from his significant contribution to the MCU as Captain America.

The MCU is currently navigating through changes, particularly after Jonathan Majors, who portrayed Kang, was removed from the franchise following his conviction for assault and harassment. Majors was set to be the MCU's next major antagonist, akin to Thanos. In response, Marvel has announced that Doctor Doom will take over as the new central villain, with Robert Downey Jr. cast in the role. This development fueled speculation about the return of other original Avengers, though no further confirmations have been made.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, has confirmed that his character will not appear in "Avengers: Doomsday" but will have a "central role" in the subsequent film, "Avengers: Secret Wars." The Russo Brothers, former directors of the Avengers series, are set to helm "Avengers: Secret Wars," which will continue to explore multiverse themes and reportedly feature Hayley Atwell reprising her role as Agent Carter.
