Customizable Japanese Cinematic Experience
The spiritual successor to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei offers players full creative control over their samurai experience through diverse visual and audio modes. Revealed during the July 10th State of Play, these cinematic options bring new depth to the game's expansive world.
"We designed Ghost of Yōtei to feel like entering your favorite samurai films," explained Sucker Punch Creative Directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox. Players can choose between English dialogue without subtitles (Standard), English with subtitles (Subtitled), or authentic Japanese dialogue with subtitles (Samurai Cinema) for maximum immersion.
Building on its predecessor's success, Sucker Punch renews its collaboration with the Akira Kurosawa estate to enhance the signature Kurosawa Mode. This beloved option recreates the legendary director's black-and-white aesthetic with film grain effects, specialized audio filters, and dynamic wind effects.
Ghost of Yōtei introduces two new director-inspired modes: Miike Mode, developed with Takashi Miike (13 Assassins), delivers visceral close-combat camera angles with realistic blood effects. Watanabe Mode, created with Samurai Champloo's Shinichirō Watanabe, adds original lo-fi musical accompaniments during exploration and battles.
The fan-favorite Photo Mode makes its return with expanded creative tools. Players can adjust color grading, time of day, weather conditions, character expressions, wind effects, and environmental particles to capture perfect moments throughout their journey.
With these new cinematic options combined with improved gameplay mechanics, Ghost of Yōtei promises to deliver an even more immersive experience for both series veterans and newcomers alike.
Ghost of Yōtei launches exclusively for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. For the latest updates on the game, explore our coverage below.
