"Dishonored 2 Receives Unexpected Update 9 Years Post-Launch"

Summary

  • Dishonored 2 unexpectedly received a small update for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
  • The patch is quite small and appears to include bug fixes and language updates.
  • Arkane Lyon is currently working on Marvel's Blade.

Dishonored 2, one of the most acclaimed Bethesda titles from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 era, has received an unexpected update. Released towards the end of 2016, this sequel to the beloved 2012 original introduced a new playable character, Emily Kaldwin, and featured memorable missions like The Clockwork Mansion and A Crack in the Slab, which captivated players with their innovative mechanics and detailed settings.

The game was developed by Arkane Lyon, which also created the critically acclaimed Deathloop in 2021. Unfortunately, its sister studio, Arkane Austin, was part of the 2024 Xbox studio closures that also affected Roundhouse Studios, Alpha Dog Games, and Tango Gameworks, although the latter was later revived by Korean publisher Krafton. Arkane Austin was behind the original Dishonored, the 2017 sci-fi game Prey, and the 2023 co-op looter shooter Redfall, which received mixed reviews. Despite these setbacks, Arkane Lyon remains active and is currently developing Marvel's Blade in collaboration with Marvel Games.

Out of the blue, fans of Dishonored 2 noticed a small update released for the game across Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam. This update appears to be a minor bug fix patch, with SteamDB indicating it also updates the game's language files. The update is only 230MB in size, but on Xbox, it necessitates a full 40GB game update.

Dishonored 2 Receives a Surprise New Update, but Not a 60 FPS Mode

The exact purpose of this unexpected update for Dishonored 2 remains unclear, and many fans are disappointed that it doesn't include the much-anticipated performance boost. While nearly every other Arkane game can run at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, Dishonored 2 is still capped at 30 FPS. Even the original Dishonored and the standalone spinoff, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, released in 2017, benefit from 60 FPS enhancements on these consoles. Some speculate that Arkane Lyon might release a 60 FPS update for Dishonored 2's tenth anniversary in 2026, but waiting that long for a performance patch might not satisfy fans.

While many fans eagerly await a third mainline Dishonored game, it seems a distant prospect, especially following the closure of Arkane Austin, which will undoubtedly slow down the production of future Arkane titles. Currently, Arkane Lyon is focused on developing the third-person game Marvel's Blade, though no release date has been announced yet.
