Gaming Mouse Overheats, Nearly Causes Apartment Fire

Author : Aurora May 04,2025

Imagine waking up to the smell of smoke, only to find your gaming mouse engulfed in flames. This alarming scenario became a reality for redditor lommelinn, who shared their harrowing experience on reddit. While their PC was in sleep mode, their Gigabyte M6880X mouse reportedly caught fire, filling the room with black smoke and nearly causing a catastrophic apartment fire. "I smelled smoke early this morning, so I rushed into my room and found my computer mouse burning with large flames," lommelinn recounted. "Black smoke filled the room. I quickly extinguished the fire, but inhaled a lot of smoke in the process and my room is in a bad shape now, covered with black particles (my modular synth as well). Fortunately, we avoided the worst, but the fact that this can happen is still shocking. It's an older wired, optical mouse from Gigabyte."

The Gigabyte M6880X is an older model, known as a typical wired gaming mouse, powered via USB 2.0 with a standard 5V at 0.5A. Given these specifications, the mouse's unexpected combustion has sparked significant concern and curiosity. Images shared by lommelinn reveal severe damage to the mouse's top rear panel, while the underside remains relatively unscathed. The reason behind this selective damage remains a mystery. Further photos show the impact on the user's desk, with visible melting on both the desk and mousepad.
