First Glimpse of Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

Author : Blake May 25,2025

Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just weeks before the console's highly anticipated launch next month. In a recent video shared via the Nintendo Today app, the company showcased the official Switch 2 carry case, which features dedicated slots for up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges, ensuring they're stored safely and securely.

As previously announced, the Switch 2 cartridges are identical in size and shape to their Switch 1 counterparts. This design choice means that the Switch 2 console can play games from both generations using a single cartridge slot. However, there's a notable distinction: the color of the cartridge. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctly red, a decision that appears to be universal across all titles, not just limited to the Mario Kart World cartridge shown in the video. The cartridge's printed design sticker also features a Switch 2 logo, setting it apart from the original Nintendo Switch design. Here's a glimpse inside the official Switch 2 carrying case, which not only has room for the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached but also accommodates six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps. As expected, the Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same dimensions as the Switch 1 cartridges.

Beyond their appearance, Switch 2 cartridges remain consistent with their predecessors, including the infamous foul-tasting coating that Nintendo applies to deter people from putting them in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," explained Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, just three weeks away. Earlier today, reports surfaced that Nintendo's key electronics partner, Samsung, is already contemplating a Switch 2 hardware refresh that would include an OLED screen upgrade, promising an even more immersive gaming experience.
