With the unveiling of the Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 and a substantial update to its official website, anticipation has heightened around the launch platforms for the game, set to release on May 26, 2026. The trailer prominently features the release date alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, confirming that these consoles will be part of GTA 6’s initial rollout. Notably, Trailer 2 was captured on a PS5, which is specifically mentioned, rather than the PS5 Pro.

The absence of a PC launch announcement or any mention of a release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 has sparked discussions about Rockstar Games' strategy. Some fans had hoped that the delay to May 2026 might lead to a simultaneous PC release, but the lack of any mention suggests that Rockstar may stick to its traditional approach of releasing console versions first. This approach, while consistent with Rockstar's past releases, may feel outdated in today’s gaming landscape, especially given the growing importance of PC for the success of multiplatform titles.

In an interview with IGN in February, Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, hinted at GTA 6’s eventual release on PC. He pointed out that while some of their titles, like Civilization 7, launch across multiple platforms simultaneously, Rockstar has historically staggered its releases. This historical reluctance to launch PC versions alongside consoles, coupled with a strained relationship with the modding community, has left some fans disappointed. However, Zelnick emphasized the significance of the PC market, noting that PC versions can account for up to 40% of a game's sales, and he anticipates this trend to continue with future console generations.

As for the Nintendo Switch 2, its absence from GTA 6 Trailer 2 was not unexpected. Although the capabilities of the Switch 2 remain unclear, its confirmed support for titles like Cyberpunk 2077 had raised some hopes for GTA 6’s inclusion. Given that GTA 6 is also slated for the less powerful Xbox Series S, a Switch 2 release seemed within the realm of possibility.

The question of when GTA 6 will arrive on PC remains open. While Rockstar titles typically make their way to PC eventually, the timeline could extend beyond the initial console release in May 2026, possibly into late 2026 or even 2027. A former Rockstar developer in December 2023 attempted to justify the delay for the PC version, urging PC gamers to trust the studio's decision-making process.

As the gaming community continues to speculate and discuss these developments, the significance of GTA 6’s launch strategy cannot be understated. The potential delay of the PC version could represent a missed opportunity, given the platform's growing importance and the expectations surrounding one of the most anticipated games in recent history.
