James Gunn has announced that DC Studios is actively developing a new Wonder Woman film, revealing that the screenplay is currently being written.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly promoting Superman's release, DC Studios co-CEO Gunn confirmed this Wonder Woman project will be distinct from the previously announced Paradise Lost HBO Max series.

A Fresh Start for Diana Prince

Wonder Woman's journey beyond comics has faced challenges recently. The live-action franchise starring Gal Gadot lost momentum following Wonder Woman 1984's polarizing reception. Despite being DC's premier female superhero, Diana has never headlined an animated series, and her much-anticipated solo video game - announced in 2021 - was ultimately canceled.

As IGN's Carlos Morales observed: "During the peak Marvel-DC rivalry of the late 2010s, the first Wonder Woman film stood as one of DC's clearest victories. The 2017 movie earned widespread critical praise and grossed over $800 million worldwide. Following divisive reactions to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Patty Jenkins' interpretation resonated powerfully with audiences... However, the 2020 sequel Wonder Woman 1984 proved disappointing, earning mixed reviews and failing to recover production costs."

The sequel's simultaneous HBO Max/theatrical release during pandemic concerns undoubtedly affected its box office performance.

While plans existed for a third installment, development stalled completely until Gunn's recent announcement. With a new film now confirmed, speculation about Diana's next cinematic portrayal will inevitably resurface.

The Expanding DC Universe Slate

Superman launches in theaters on July 11, marking the beginning of Gunn's rebooted DC Universe. The film precedes Peacemaker Season 2's HBO Max debut on August 21, 2025. Supergirl arrives June 26, 2026, though Lanterns still lacks an official release date.

Other confirmed DCU projects include Clayface (September 11, 2026), though The Authority appears to be facing production challenges. According to Gunn, Waller - the Peacemaker spinoff - has experienced setbacks, while Booster Gold development progresses steadily. Paradise Lost remains in development, though moving gradually.
