Keanu Reeves has provided the most exciting update yet on the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult classic, Constantine. Playing the role of John Constantine, an occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, Reeves has been a fan favorite since his portrayal in the original film following his success with The Matrix. For over two decades, fans have been clamoring for a sequel, and now, it seems their wishes might finally come true.
During a recent interview with Inverse, Reeves confirmed that a pitch meeting with DC Studios had resulted in a green light to develop a script for Constantine 2. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’" Reeves stated. This marks a significant step forward for the project, although it's important to note that there's still no guarantee of a final approval from DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. As of now, Constantine 2 is not officially part of the rebooted DCU, and neither Gunn nor Safran have mentioned it as a confirmed project.
Reeves also teased that if Constantine 2 does get made, it will be set in the same universe as the original film. "We're not going off that," he assured fans, adding with a touch of humor, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."
Adding to the anticipation, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared his own update with ComicBook. He revealed that the script for Constantine 2 is already in his inbox, but he's been hesitant to read it due to his high hopes for the project. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," he said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
