Captain America: Brave New World surpasses expectations, raking in an estimated $100 million domestically during its Presidents Day weekend debut.
Comscore, a box office tracking firm, reports the latest Marvel Studios film grossed approximately $88.5 million across 4,105 theaters over the three-day weekend, projecting a four-day total of $100 million. Adding its impressive $92.4 million international earnings, Captain America: Brave New World boasts an estimated $192.4 million global weekend box office.
Deadline reveals the film's production budget reached $180 million, requiring a global box office gross of approximately $425 million to break even.
This strong opening places Captain America: Brave New World as the fourth-highest-grossing Presidents Day release, trailing only three other superhero films: Black Panther ($242 million), Deadpool ($152 million), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($120 million).
Despite positive box office numbers, the film has received mixed critical reception. IGN's review awarded it a 5/10, stating, "Captain America: Brave New World feels neither brave, nor all that new, despite strong performances from Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, and Carl Lumbly."
The film's long-term performance will be crucial in determining whether it can reverse the recent downturn in Marvel Cinematic Universe box office success (excluding last year's highly successful Deadpool & Wolverine). Its success will significantly impact the anticipation for upcoming releases, including Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
