The Monster Hunter series has become a global sensation, earning both critical praise and commercial success across numerous main titles and spin-offs. At its core lies an engaging gameplay loop - hunt massive creatures, gather resources, craft stronger gear, then take on even greater threats. This formula translates perfectly to tabletop form in Monster Hunter World: The Board Game. Like its digital counterpart, it offers multiple gameplay variations. Here's what you should know before diving into this board game adaptation.
Core Boxes
Each core set functions as a complete standalone game featuring four hunters and four monsters. However, they're designed to be compatible, allowing players to mix elements from different sets. While most components are unique to their respective boxes, some overlap exists, with each set including special cards for combined play.
For newcomers, we recommend starting with one core set before considering expansions. Both core sets maintain identical gameplay mechanics and production quality, featuring stunning miniatures that capture the series' sense of scale. Your choice ultimately comes down to aesthetic preference or nostalgia from the video games.
Monster Hunter World: The Board Game - Ancient Forest
This set transports players to a prehistoric jungle environment. Hunters face dinosaur-inspired beasts including Great Jagras, Tobi-Kadachi, Anjanath, and the dragon Rathalos. The included hunters wield classic weapons: Great Sword, Sword & Shield, Dual Blades, and Bow.
Monster Hunter World: The Board Game - Wildspire Waste
Set in arid badlands, this collection features rugged terrain with creatures including armored Barroth, amphibious Jyurados, bird-like Pukei-Pukei, and the subterranean Diablos. Hunters employ more unconventional weapons: Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Insect Glaive, and Heavy Bowgun.
Retail Expansions
Originally offered through Kickstarter, most expansions remain available at retail, though some prove harder to find:
Elder Dragon expansions (Nergigante, Kushala Daora, Teostra) introduce higher difficulty monsters and extended campaign content. However, their functionality varies by core set, making a second core set often preferable to expansions.
Hunter's Arsenal Expansion
This expansion offers the most gameplay variety, adding six new weapon types: Light Bowgun, Long Sword, Gunlance, Hammer, Lance, and Hunting Horn. Note that full utilization requires both core sets.
Nergigante Expansion
A recommended single-monster expansion as it provides crafting options for all existing hunters. The spiked dragon offers a unique, evolving combat experience.
Kushala Daora Expansion
Featuring the largest miniature in the series, this wind dragon forces players to contend with environmental hazards during combat.
Teostra Expansion
The classic fire dragon delivers punishing ranged attacks, available exclusively through Steamforged Games.
Exclusive Content
Kulu-Ya-Ku Expansion
Originally a Kickstarter exclusive, this bird-like creature's tool-using abilities create unpredictable combat scenarios.
