Nintendo Switch 2 GameChat Now Requires Phone Number Verification

Author : Mila May 24,2025

If you're gearing up for the Nintendo Switch 2, you'll want to know about the new GameChat feature. This video calling software is integrated into every Nintendo Switch 2 console and is highlighted as a major enhancement for the new system. However, setting up GameChat requires a bit of preparation—you'll need to verify your identity by providing a phone number. If you've already linked a number to your Nintendo Account, that will do the trick. Once you submit your number, Nintendo will send a verification text, linking your GameChat activity to that phone number. Remember, with great power comes great responsibility!

For younger players, there's an additional layer of security. If you're under 16, GameChat will be off-limits until a parent or guardian uses the Parental Controls app to enable it. They'll also need to provide their own phone number for verification. This information, spotted by Eurogamer on Nintendo's website, suggests that every Nintendo Account user on a Switch 2 will need to go through this process, even if the console is shared. IGN has reached out to Nintendo for clarification on this.

Using GameChat is straightforward. Just press the new 'C' button on your Switch 2 controller to initiate a video chat with up to four people or join an audio call with up to 24. During video calls, you can use a separately sold camera peripheral to broadcast yourself and stream your gameplay. It's a first for Nintendo, marking a significant step forward in their online offerings, which historically have lagged behind other console manufacturers.

Last week, Digital Foundry released the final specs for the Nintendo Switch 2 and discussed concerns about GameChat's impact on system resources. Developers seem worried about potential performance hits, with Nintendo offering a testing tool that simulates the real-world effects of GameChat on the system. This tool helps developers test without running actual GameChat sessions. The question remains whether GameChat affects game performance for users, and we'll have a clearer picture once the Switch 2 launches on June 5.

Don't forget, GameChat will be free for the first 10 months after the Switch 2's release. After March 31, 2026, you'll need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to continue using it. Recently, we've seen the first Switch 2 game cartridge and heard rumors about Samsung's interest in supplying OLED screens for future Switch 2 models.
