Paul Rudd Hypes Nintendo Switch 2 With Playful Throwback to Infamous 90s SNES Commercial

Author : Gabriel May 13,2025

Nintendo has enlisted actor Paul Rudd to promote the Nintendo Switch 2 in a new commercial that cleverly and endearingly pays homage to his iconic 1991 Super Nintendo ad. In the original commercial, a youthful Rudd, sporting a long black jacket, beaded necklace, and distinctive hairstyle, confidently walks into a drive-in movie theater with his Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). He connects it to the big screen and entertains a captivated audience with games like *The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past*, *F-Zero*, and *Sim City*. The ad famously ends with the SNES catchphrase: "Now you're playing with power."

Fast forward 34 years, and Rudd, remarkably unchanged in appearance, returns in the new Nintendo Switch 2 commercial. Dressed in the same iconic outfit, he strides into a living room and sets up the new console. This time, he's joined by comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, along with a child who calls him "Uncle Paul." They dive into *Mario Kart World*, utilizing the system's innovative GameChat feature. The commercial playfully acknowledges the original's cheesiness, with nods to the fog machine and fan that added drama to the 90s ad. As they play, Rudd's companions tease him about his attire and nostalgic attitude. The ad wraps up with a new slogan: "Now we're playing together," emphasizing the Switch 2's focus on communal gaming experiences. The commercial's self-awareness and humor make it a charming tribute to its predecessor.

IGN had the opportunity to interview Paul Rudd about his experience filming the follow-up commercial over three decades later. Rudd shared that he believes he wore his own beaded necklace in the original ad and enjoyed playing *Mario Kart World* on set between takes. Regrettably, he was not allowed to take a Nintendo Switch 2 home. You can view the full interview here:
