PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run

If you polled gamers on which pro sports franchise they'd most like to see 2K revive, NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead returning for a third installment of PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's clear there's much to enjoy.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished feel. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly massive course selection (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is genuinely fun. Minor performance hiccups, such as occasional framerate drops on PC when surveying holes, were present, but ultimately didn't detract significantly.

PlayThe improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for customization, ranging from forgiving to highly realistic, impacting the sensitivity to input errors. A "Perfect Swing" mode offers a more relaxed experience. The ability to adjust shot shaping (using LB) and lateral tee box positioning adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics further enhance the realism. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, provided a satisfyingly smooth experience.

MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative elements. The inclusion of Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing) adds a humorous touch. Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further affects performance. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) provides ongoing goals.

PlayMyPlayer creation, while not extensively explored, offers a robust character customization system with skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social gameplay. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent competence across all areas without achieving exceptional mastery in any single aspect. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it points towards a solid, enjoyable golf game. A playable demo is currently available, allowing players to experience the game firsthand before purchasing.
