Play Games in Portrait Mode with New Tate Mode Mini Controller!

If you’re a gamer who’s ever struggled with vertical arcade games on your phone, you might be intrigued by the new Tate mode mini controller designed by modder Max Kern. This innovative solution aims to address the common issue of playing old-school vertical shooters and retro games that are best enjoyed in portrait mode.

Most gaming controllers are optimized for landscape play, similar to devices like the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic games require you to hold your phone vertically, much like you would when scrolling through Instagram. Max Kern's response to this challenge is a compact USB-C gamepad specifically designed for portrait-mode gaming, also known as Tate mode. This controller connects directly to your phone’s USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.

Max crafted the Tate Mode mini controller using a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip and 3D-printed the case and buttons through JLCPCB. If you're interested in building your own, Max provides a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

The controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. This versatility is impressive for such a small device.

However, there are some concerns. The setup may strain the USB-C port, as the gamepad supports part of the phone’s weight. This could lead to potential bending of the connector over time, requiring you to support both the phone and the controller during use.

On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some users admire the creativity but worry about potential hand cramps and discomfort. Others are more open to the concept, appreciating the DIY aspect of the project. It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but a DIY project, with all the necessary firmware and print files available on Thingiverse and Github.
