Pokémon TCG Pocket Cards Feature Iconic Game Boy Locations

Author : Emery May 17,2025

Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have been captivated by its card art for months, but a recent revelation has sparked excitement among players: some cards contain hidden details that link them directly to the classic Game Boy games. The discovery wave started over the weekend when Reddit user asch_win noticed that the Spearow card features subtle landmarks reminiscent of the Pokémon world. This Normal/Flying-type Pokémon is depicted amidst grass, a fence, trees, and two distinct buildings. Notably, the purple and yellow building in the background is none other than the Celadon City Department Store from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Just to the left, you can see elements of Route 16 in the Kanto region, a known spot for catching Spearow.

It's clear that the developers at Creatures Inc. and DeNA have crafted these cards with intention, weaving in nods to the iconic games that propelled Pokémon into a global phenomenon. The fun doesn't end with Spearow, as Reddit user jteede uncovered further connections to early Pokémon titles. These include a full-art Diglett card near Vermillion City, a Haunter card next to Lavender Town's tower, and more. Asch_win also took a closer look at some Supporter cards, revealing that these, too, reference specific locations from Pokémon history.

While most card illustrations depict Pokémon in enchanting, seemingly lore-unconnected settings, some cards, like a certain Pikachu variant, mirror real-world collectible cards. Yet, it's within Pokémon TCG Pocket that players are uncovering these cleverly hidden Easter Eggs. Over the weekend, the community has been meticulously examining other cards, uncovering references such as the S.S. Anne cruise liner hidden within a Gyarados full-art card and a trio of Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards that together narrate a story near FireRed and LeafGreen’s seaside Snorlax.

Since its launch for mobile gaming fans in October, Pokémon TCG Pocket has released just one additional booster expansion set, Mythical Island, bringing the total to four packs available. As more sets are anticipated to be released in the future, along with occasional card additions through Wonder Pick Events and other updates, players should stay vigilant for more hidden references across the series' many generations.
