Star Wars fans eager to delve into the universe beyond *The Rise of Skywalker* have a treat coming their way, and it's not from Shawn Levy... yet. While the excitement for Levy's upcoming film *Star Wars: Starfighter* remains high, a new young adult novel titled *Star Wars: The Last Order* is set to satisfy fans' appetites sooner. This novel, revealed by publisher Penguin Random House, offers a deeper exploration of John Boyega's beloved hero Finn and Naomi Ackie's resistance ally Jannah, characters introduced in the 2019 film.
Written by Kwame Mbalia, *Star Wars: The Last Order* follows the events of *The Rise of Skywalker*. The official synopsis from the publisher states: "Following the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance rescues a ship full of young passengers who had been kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah set out to find the First Order officer responsible before he can endanger any more children, the two former stormtroopers must wrestle with their own complicated pasts as soldiers of the oppressive regime."
This novel marks the first Star Wars project to explore the universe post-*Rise of Skywalker*, despite not being the first planned. As for Shawn Levy's contribution to the post-*Rise of Skywalker* narrative, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed its place in the timeline. In a February interview with Deadline, she stated, "It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." Jonathan Tropper, the writer on the project, recently expressed his enthusiasm to Screen Rant, saying, "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." The film's release date was officially announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan, with Ryan Gosling confirmed to star, set for May 28, 2027.
