The debut trailer for Predator: Badlands has ignited curiosity among fans, especially regarding the reimagined design of the iconic Predator.
In a discussion with Bloody Disgusting, director Dan Trachtenberg shared fresh insights into Predator: Badlands, revealing his bold vision for the legendary sci-fi hunter.
The new Predator, named Dek, is portrayed by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Described as an underdog Yautja “runt,” Dek takes on the protagonist role, a departure from the Yautja’s usual antagonistic presence in Predator films.
Dek chooses a perilous “Death Planet” named Kalisk as his hunting ground, where he battles to earn his father’s respect and secure his place within his clan.
Dek’s design stands out from previous Predators, appearing more human-like and less imposing in stature, aligning with his unique “runt” protagonist role.
Predator: Badlands centers on Dek’s journey, but he’s not alone on Kalisk. He teams up with a character played by Elle Fanning, who, as IGN noted, bears a striking resemblance to a synth from the Alien universe.

Trachtenberg revealed that the dynamic between Dek and Fanning’s character draws inspiration from the 2005 PlayStation classic Shadow of the Colossus.
“I’m deeply influenced by video games like Shadow of the Colossus, where a protagonist’s bond with another character adds depth and emotion,” Trachtenberg shared.
“In Shadow of the Colossus, the connection with a horse is heart-wrenching. Similarly, Predator: Badlands explores a Predator paired with someone who contrasts him. He’s reserved, while she’s expressive. She has strengths he lacks, and I’m thrilled for audiences to discover her unique qualities,” he added.
Trachtenberg remained cryptic about potential Alien connections and the true nature of Fanning’s character. “Her character has a distinctive edge that makes her pairing with Dek compelling,” he hinted.
Predator: Badlands hits theaters on November 7, 2025. Before that, Trachtenberg’s animated anthology Predator: Killer of Killers arrives in June.
