To achieve the best ending in *Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2*, completing specific tasks is crucial, and one of these pivotal tasks is saving Sam. Knowing where to find Sam during your quest can significantly impact your journey towards perfection.
Rescuing Sam During "Reckoning"
As you approach the climax of the main quest line, you'll discover that Sam is being held captive at Praguer’s Camp, captured by Brabant. Your opportunity to save him arises during the main quest "Reckoning." You can't simply stroll into the camp and liberate him; instead, you have the choice between a stealthy infiltration or a more direct, violent approach.
To move freely within the camp without arousing suspicion, you'll need a guard's outfit. You could obtain this by eliminating a guard and taking it from him, ensuring to hide his body afterward. Alternatively, a less confrontational method involves searching the camp's numerous chests for a suitable disguise. Once you've donned the outfit, you can explore the camp to locate Sam without being questioned.

Sam is located in the barn on the left side of the camp, past the open area with a cooking fire. Access the barn by using the ladder on its side and dropping down inside, where you'll confront Brabant. At this juncture, you face a critical decision: you can either kill or spare Brabant. Opting to spare him contributes to achieving the best ending, but the choice ultimately rests with you.
When to Rescue Sam
After freeing Sam, it's not immediately time to escort him out of the camp. Sam informs you about von Aulitz, who is also present within the camp. It's advisable to deal with von Aulitz first, then secure a horse, and finally return to Sam to facilitate his escape. Sam can safely wait while you complete these tasks, and this sequence makes the process smoother, as you'll need to carry him to the horse.
Von Aulitz can be found in the main part of the camp. Wearing the guard's outfit allows you to enter his quarters without issue. Upon finding him, you'll see that von Aulitz is already dying. He requests a dignified death, which you can grant as the most honorable option. Alternatively, you can choose to kill him cruelly or leave him to die slowly. Interestingly, leaving him to die actually contributes to achieving the best ending.
Once these tasks are complete, your final steps are to retrieve Sam and secure a horse. Sam will still be in the barn where you left him. If questioned by a guard about moving him, simply state that you're handling a body, which will dispel any suspicion. Exit through the camp gates, turn right, and follow the perimeter until you reach the stables.
