Sonic Fan-Made Game Has Serious Sonic Mania Vibes

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-Inspired Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made title from Starteam, captures the essence of Sonic Mania, appealing to fans of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art. This labor of love, in development for at least four years (first showcased at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo), imagines a 32-bit Sonic adventure, evoking the feel of a potential Sega Saturn release. The game builds upon the legacy of classic Genesis titles while adding unique elements.

The recently released second demo (early 2025) offers players a taste of this retro-inspired platformer. The classic trio—Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles—return alongside two new playable characters: Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) and Tunnel the Mole (a new character inspired by Illusion Island). Each character boasts unique level paths, adding replayability.

The special stages are clearly inspired by Sonic Mania, presenting 3D ring-collecting challenges against the clock. A complete playthrough of Sonic's levels takes roughly an hour; the additional characters each have a single stage, bringing the total playtime to around two hours.

Key Features:

  • Classic Sonic Gameplay: Retains the fast-paced, side-scrolling action of classic Sonic games.
  • Pixel Art Style: A visually appealing retro aesthetic reminiscent of Sonic Mania.
  • New Playable Characters: Introduces Fang the Sniper and Tunnel the Mole, expanding gameplay options.
  • Unique Level Paths: Each character offers distinct routes through the game's zones.
  • Mania-Inspired Special Stages: 3D ring-collecting challenges similar to those in Sonic Mania.

Sonic Galactic successfully channels the spirit of a beloved classic, offering a compelling experience for both nostalgic fans and newcomers alike.
