Sony has unveiled a new PlayStation studio named teamLFG, which originated at Bungie, the developer behind Destiny and Marathon. Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, shared his excitement about teamLFG's ambitious incubation project on the PlayStation Blog.

The name teamLFG, which stands for 'Looking For Group,' hints at a focus on social gaming. The studio's debut game is described as a team-based action game that draws inspiration from an eclectic mix of genres including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." Set in a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe, the game promises a lighthearted and comedic atmosphere.

teamLFG aims to foster friendship, community, and a sense of belonging among players. They envision a gaming experience where players log in to find their teammates already online, recognize familiar names, and create memorable moments that become the stuff of legends within the game's community. The studio plans to develop immersive multiplayer worlds that players can engage with for countless hours, emphasizing the importance of player feedback and community involvement throughout the game's development and live service phases.

"We want our players to feel excited when they log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online. We want our players to recognize familiar names and to make myths and memes out of each other. We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff," teamLFG stated.

The incubation project that evolved into teamLFG's game was initially developed at Bungie but was spun off amid significant layoffs in 2023 and 2024. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs affecting approximately 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another 220 in 2024. Amid these changes, 155 employees were integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and the incubation project was announced.

Recent developments at Bungie include the full reveal of the extraction shooter Marathon and the confirmation of the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a Destiny spinoff project called Payback has been canceled. A former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing for improvements to Destiny 2, suggesting a positive influence from the parent company.
