Kadokawa, now a Sony Group subsidiary, sets ambitious publishing goals. Aiming for 9,000 original IP publications annually by fiscal year 2027, this represents a 50% increase from their 2023 output. This expansion is fueled by Sony's significant investment and acquisition of a 10% stake.
Kadokawa President Takeshi Natsuno, in an interview with Nikkei, outlined the plan. The strategy involves leveraging Sony's global distribution network for international expansion and a significant increase in editorial staff (to approximately 1,000) to enhance efficiency. A medium-term goal of 7,000 titles by fiscal 2025 is also projected.
This increased output will support a "media mix strategy," adapting successful IPs into anime, games, and other media. Natsuno emphasizes the goal of creating a diverse portfolio that yields major successes. Sony benefits through its Crunchyroll platform, gaining access to a wider range of Kadokawa's anime IPs for its 15 million+ subscribers.
Kadokawa's extensive IP library includes titles like Bungo Stray Dogs, Oshi no Ko, The Rising of the Shield Hero, and My Happy Marriage, along with video game IPs such as Elden Ring and Dragon Quest. This collaboration aligns with Sony's broader multimedia ambitions, encompassing live-action adaptations, anime co-productions, and international distribution.
The partnership promises significant growth for both companies, expanding Kadokawa's reach and solidifying Sony's position in the multimedia market.
