The Nintendo Switch 2 is on the horizon, and if you're planning to snag one, it's important to know that it comes with just 256GB of built-in storage. To enjoy a seamless gaming experience without constantly uninstalling and reinstalling games, you'll need to expand that storage. Unlike its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch 2 requires a MicroSD Express card, which is faster but pricier than traditional UHS-based SD cards.
Although MicroSD Express cards have been available for a while, they haven't been widely adopted by creative professionals, leading to limited options on the market. However, with the upcoming launch of the Switch 2, expect a surge in availability of these cards. Keep in mind that since the console isn't out yet, I haven't had the chance to test these cards. Still, they are produced by reputable manufacturers known for their quality storage solutions.
Why MicroSD Express?
The Nintendo Switch 2's exclusive use of MicroSD Express cards for storage expansion may seem puzzling, but it's likely due to the system's demand for faster storage. The console's internal storage uses UFS flash, similar to that in smartphones, which is significantly faster than the eMMC drive in the original Switch. By requiring MicroSD Express cards, Nintendo ensures that developers can rely on consistent high-speed storage whether games are stored internally or on an expansion card.
Regular MicroSD cards are only suitable for storing screenshots and videos from your first-gen Switch. Unlike the PS5, which supports last-generation games on slower external drives, the Switch 2 offers no such flexibility. If you want to expand your storage, a MicroSD Express card is your only option.

Among the available MicroSD Express cards, the Lexar Play Pro stands out as the fastest and largest capacity option. With read speeds up to 900MB/s and up to 1TB of storage, it's the top choice currently on the market. However, due to high demand from the Switch 2 launch, it's currently out of stock. Keep an eye on the Lexar Play Pro, especially the 1TB model, as it may become available again soon. For now, you can place a backorder at Adorama, expected to ship in July.
2. SanDisk MicroSD Express
The MicroSD Express Card You Can Actually Buy Right Now
SanDisk, a well-known name in SD cards, offers a MicroSD Express card that's currently more accessible. While it only comes in a 256GB version, matching the Switch 2's internal storage, it's a reliable choice for doubling your storage capacity. With a read speed of up to 880MB/s, it's slightly slower than the Lexar but still very capable. The SanDisk option is readily available, making it a convenient choice if you don't want to wait for other options.
3. Samsung MicroSD Express for Switch 2
The Official Option We Know Very Little About
Samsung's MicroSD Express card, sold directly by Nintendo, is the official choice for the Switch 2. While details on its performance and capacity are scarce, the card's association with Nintendo adds a level of trust.
