Mahjong School: Master Japanese Riichi Mahjong
Mahjong School is your dedicated place to learn how to play Mahjong. We focus on teaching the Japanese style of Mahjong, which is largely the same as the European (Riichi) and American styles. While there are some differences from Chinese, Hong Kong, or Taiwanese styles, mastering Japanese Riichi will make it easy for you to adapt to other variations.
Mahjong School offers three primary tools to help you learn Japanese Mahjong.
1. The Mahjong Calculator.
You can click to add tiles to your hand or declare Tsumo, Ron, Pon, or Chi to build a winning hand. You can also configure various conditions like Dora and self-draw. Once set, the calculator will compute the Fu and Han for your hand and provide your final score, complete with detailed descriptions including hand names.
2. The Simple Tutorial.
This tutorial lists all possible Han values, each with an example hand and a clear explanation.
3. Practice Mode.
Play Mahjong directly against an AI opponent. The AI is set to an entry-level difficulty, making it very friendly for new learners. Practice is the most effective way to learn Mahjong.
