As a practical individual when it comes to spending money, I typically stick to the essentials and occasionally indulge in a video game on sale. However, last year marked a shift in my purchasing habits when I considered buying a LEGO set—something I hadn't thought about since my childhood days of building LEGO. The allure of LEGO sets faded as I grew older, but the high cost of these kits, especially those linked to popular franchises, had always kept me at bay.
It was the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant set that finally swayed me. On sale since October of last year for under $50, I decided it was time to add a whimsical touch to my desk with a new "potted plant."

As a dedicated fan of the Mario franchise, this set seemed like the perfect homage to my favorite games. While LEGO's botanical line offers many appealing flower sets, none capture the playful yet eerie charm of the Piranha Plant.

Building the set was a rewarding experience, and now, having it on my desk brings me joy. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, as if I'm nurturing my own Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process itself was engaging, taking just one afternoon yet challenging enough to keep my interest throughout. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but I'm eager to expand my collection after this enjoyable experience.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?
LEGO sets can be a costly hobby, especially with new adult-targeted sets hitting the market at prices over $200. It's easy to overspend on these delightful creations, but there's a balance to strike between indulging in a beloved hobby and financial prudence.
The fact that the Mario LEGO set was under $50 made it a justifiable purchase for me. The hours spent building it and the daily joy it brings are worth far more than the cost. For me, $50 is the sweet spot where I can enjoy a LEGO set without breaking the bank.
