Kingdom Hearts 4 Springs to Life as Missing-Link Faces Cancellation

Kingdom Hearts 4 Images Reveal New Heartless Type and Playable King Mickey

After three years of silence, Kingdom Hearts 4 has reemerged with striking new screenshots. On May 15, official Kingdom Hearts social media channels shared a collection of images, offering fans a long-awaited glimpse into the highly anticipated sequel. Square Enix also confirmed that development is progressing steadily.

"We’re fully committed to crafting Kingdom Hearts IV and are pouring our hearts into its development. We aim to deliver an experience that meets your expectations!" the announcement stated. It continued, "Your enthusiasm inspires us, and we’re deeply grateful. We’re thrilled to share more about Kingdom Hearts IV when the time comes. Thank you for your patience."

While no release date was announced, the new images sparked excitement and speculation among fans. One image, in particular, stood out: a potential hint at a playable King Mickey. Although Mickey was playable in limited roles in past titles like Kingdom Hearts 2 and 358/2 Days—stepping in when Sora fell or during specific missions—this image suggests he may return in a similar capacity, possibly for a brief segment.

Fan theories propose that the library where Mickey appears could be in Scala ad Caelum, a key location from Kingdom Hearts 3’s finale. His purpose there remains unclear, but he might be investigating the Foretellers, Keyblade Masters expected to play a major role in the upcoming storyline.

Other images showcase Sora, now with a more grounded design, in dynamic scenes. One depicts him battling a new Heartless variant, while another shows him in Quadratum’s streets, with a radiant light glowing in the distance. The former image hints at a "Build" mechanic, possibly allowing Sora to create tools like grappling hooks or drills for combat.

Another screenshot features Strelitzia, seen in the game’s reveal trailer and Kingdom Hearts Union X, alongside a rotary phone. Given Quadratum’s inspiration from real-world Tokyo, as noted by director Tetsuya Nomura in a 2022 Famitsu interview, rotary phones may tie into the setting. Whether this impacts Kingdom Hearts 3’s gummiphones—used for photos and a pseudo-Instagram app—remains a mystery, but fans are eager for answers.

The release of these screenshots marked a significant moment for Kingdom Hearts fans, following a long stretch of minimal updates since the game’s April 2022 reveal at the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event. Fans hope to avoid another lengthy wait like the decade between Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3.
