Michael J. Fox has teamed up with Gibson Guitars to locate the legendary Cherry Red ES-345 he played during the Enchantment Under the Sea dance sequence in Back to the Future.
The Great Guitar Hunt
"We need your help tracking down the guitar from Back to the Future," Fox announced in a special YouTube video. "It's either lost somewhere in the space-time continuum or sitting forgotten in someone's garage."
The guitar manufacturer created retro-style "wanted" posters seeking information about the missing instrument's whereabouts.
The campaign features appearances from co-stars Lea Thompson and Christopher Lloyd, plus musician Huey Lewis, all urging fans to submit tips through Gibson's dedicated website or hotline.
Featured in Upcoming Documentary
The guitar hunt will be chronicled in Gibson's forthcoming documentary "Lost to the Future." Director Doc Crotzer acknowledges the challenges of tracking a 40-year-old artifact:
"We've followed countless leads over the years, but memories fade and records from that era are scarce. The truth remains elusive amidst conflicting accounts."
The search coincides with Back to the Future's 40th anniversary celebration.
The Franchise's Future
Screenwriter Bob Gale recently dismissed any possibility of new Back to the Future content despite fan speculation and the Cobra Kai creators' interest:
"People keep asking, but the answer remains never - no sequels, no prequels, no spinoffs. Some stories are complete as they are."
- Yes, give me Back to the Future 4!
- Yes, give me a Back to the Future TV series!
- Yes, give me a Back to the Future prequel!
- No way, it's perfect as is!
The debate continues as fans worldwide celebrate four decades of this beloved time-travel classic.
