Space Marine 2 Modders to Add Tau, Necrons, and More, Starting with a Fishing Mini-Game

Fans of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* are buzzing with excitement after the game's developer, Saber Interactive, handed over the keys to its internal editor to modders. This move has sparked hopes that the game could enjoy a long lifespan, similar to *Skyrim*, thanks to user-generated content.

Game director Dmitry Grigorenko announced this significant development on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, labeling it as "our biggest milestone yet in supporting the modding community." The release of the official Integration Studio for public use marks a major step forward. This tool, previously used internally by the developers for all aspects of gameplay development, now allows modders to delve into level scenarios, game modes, AI behavior, abilities, melee combo logic, user interface, and HUD elements, making modding easier and more efficient.

Grigorenko expressed his commitment to supporting the modding scene, saying, "Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it. Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling. We’re excited to see what you build next — whether it’s a cinematic campaign, wild new game mode, or something we never saw coming."

To kick things off, Grigorenko shared humorous concept art for a potential "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, featuring Marneus Calgar, the leader of the Ultramarines chapter. This playful idea is now technically feasible with the new tools at modders' disposal.

To gain insights into the modding community's plans, I spoke with Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, the creator of the acclaimed Space Marine 2’s Astartes Overhaul mod. Fresh from launching a mod that enables 12-player co-op in Space Marine 2, Tom revealed that he now has access to all scripting tools that control mission dynamics and game components like weapons and abilities.

This newfound access means modders can potentially create innovative game modes, such as a Space Marine 2 roguelite mode where players start with just a combat knife and face progressively tougher enemies, with chances to acquire weapons and health upon defeating foes. "Killing a Carnifex might grant you a Heavy Bolter," Tom suggested.

While a new cinematic campaign featuring Chaos is feasible, Tom noted that creating cutscenes is more challenging due to the lack of access to animation tools. However, he is working on adding new factions to the game, including the Tau and Necrons, using available rigs.

Meanwhile, the modding community is racing to develop the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game that Grigorenko challenged them to create.

The reaction from Space Marine 2 fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Although the game is well-received and one of the best-selling Warhammer video games, its official content is limited to three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. The modding tools now empower players to expand the faction roster, fulfilling hopes that were teased in the campaign but never officially realized.

"This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim," remarked redditor Mortwight, highlighting the potential longevity of Space Marine 2 with modding support.

This development is particularly intriguing given Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment's recent announcement of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3*. Some fans expressed concerns about the future of Space Marine 2's potential DLC, but both companies have assured that they are not abandoning the game. With modders now wielding the editor, Space Marine 2 is poised for a vibrant future.
