If you’re a devoted fan of *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered* on PC, you might have encountered some significant issues. According to the tech experts at Digital Foundry, the game suffers from severe performance problems. Video producer Alex Battaglia described it as "perhaps one of the worst-running games I've ever tested for Digital Foundry."
"Even with the most powerful hardware, the stuttering is egregious, significantly detracting from the gaming experience. It's baffling how this was deemed acceptable for release," Battaglia remarked.
He further noted that beyond the stuttering, the game is unusually resource-intensive. "Even if you can tolerate the stutter, you'll likely need to lower settings just to maintain a decent average frame rate," he added.
Given these issues, it's no surprise that the most-downloaded mod for Oblivion Remastered on Nexus Mods is P40L0’s ‘Ultimate Engine Tweaks (Anti-Stutters - Lower Latency - No Film Grain - No Chromatic Aberration - Lossless),’ with an impressive 386,604 downloads in less than a week. Here’s the mod description:
“Definitive Unreal ‘Engine.ini’ changes aimed at eliminating most stutters, boosting performance and stability, reducing input latency, and enhancing picture clarity, all without any visual compromise.”
P40L0 elaborated, “After months of testing with UE5, I’m sharing my definitive custom ‘Engine.ini’ adjustments for the game. My objective was to incorporate as many optimizations as possible across CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD to eradicate most stuttering, enhance performance, minimize input latency, and improve picture clarity by removing Film Grain and Chromatic Aberration, optimizing DLSS/FSR upscaling, and more, all without introducing any visual loss, glitches, or crashes.”

Feedback from users who have downloaded the mod has been overwhelmingly positive. "Stutter be gone! Simply amazing, thanks!" exclaimed chubbyd07. "This .ini is a miracle. My frame rate jumped from 15-20 fps outside the prison to a stable 65-70. I'm running on a 3600XT and a 2060 with 20GB of RAM," added yeeto51. "Uhm, what the hell! I went from 60fps on High Preset around Waynon Priory to 90-110fps in the same location. Wizardry!!" said BabaSmith.
Despite the PC version's issues, *Oblivion Remastered* remains incredibly popular, boasting an impressive peak concurrent player count on Steam and over 4 million players across all platforms. On Steam, the game enjoys a 'very positive' user review rating.
However, a recent hotfix released on April 25 has impacted Microsoft Store players' UI settings for graphics, particularly affecting upscaling and anti-aliasing options. At the time of this article, players using the Microsoft Store version (including those on Game Pass for PC) are unable to adjust these settings due to the issue. Bethesda has acknowledged the problem and is working on a solution.
