Pesten With Cards is a beloved Dutch card game that translates to "Bullying With Cards." Similar games, known by different names in other countries, include Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Shedding, Puque, Чешский Дурак, Фараон, Крокодил, Tschau Sepp, and Uno. The objective is straightforward: be the first player to shed all your cards. A crucial rule is that the winner must declare "Last Card" before playing their final card. Failure to do so results in a penalty of drawing two additional cards.
The game accommodates multiple decks, including jokers. Each player starts with seven cards, and the remaining cards form a draw pile, with the top card flipped to start the discard pile. Gameplay proceeds clockwise, and if the initial card revealed is a "Pest-card," the dealer must follow its effects as if they played it.
During your turn, you must match the top card of the discard pile by either number or suit. Jokers and Jacks are versatile, playable on any card. If you can't play, you draw from the stock. If the drawn card is playable, you're given the option to use it immediately or save it for later.
Last Card
When down to your last card, you must click the "Last Card" button above your hand to signal to other players. Forgetting to do so when playing your last card leads to a two-card penalty, and your last card remains unplayed. Incorrectly calling "Last Card" also incurs the same penalty. You can press the "Last Card" button out of turn to ensure you're prepared.
Winning the round involves playing your last card, but it cannot be a special card.
Special Cards
Special cards trigger specific actions based on their number or type. The actions can vary widely across different Dutch households, so it's advisable to customize the game settings to match your preferred rules. Here are the typical actions associated with special cards:
Joker: The next player draws five cards. If they have a joker, they can play it, forcing the subsequent player to draw ten cards. Each additional joker increases the penalty by five cards. Players drawing cards cannot play them immediately; the turn passes to the next player.
Two: The next player draws two cards. If they have a two, they can play it, making the next player draw four cards. Each two adds two cards to the penalty. Optionally, a joker can be played on a two, adding five more cards. A two cannot be played on a joker. As with jokers, players drawing cards cannot play them immediately.
Seven: You must play another card on top of it. Remember to say "Last Card" if you're down to your last card after playing a seven. If you can't play another card, draw from the stock.
Eight: The next player skips their turn, and play continues with the player after them. In a two-player game, playing an eight lets you play another card immediately, similar to a seven.
Ten: Each player passes one card to the player on their left. Choose the card you wish to pass by clicking on it.
