Tichu is a captivating card game that blends elements of Bridge, Daihinmin, and Poker, designed for four players divided into two teams. Each team member sits opposite their partner, collaborating to outscore their opponents. The objective is to be the first team to reach a predetermined point total, set before the game begins.
The Tichu deck comprises 56 cards, divided into four suits: Jade, Swords, Pagodas, and Stars. Each suit ranges from 2 to 10, followed by J, Q, K, and A. Additionally, the deck includes four special cards: the Dragon, the Phoenix, the Hound, and the Mah Jong.
At the start of each round, players receive eight cards and have the option to call "Grand Tichu," a bold 200-point bet that the caller will be the first to discard all their cards. After this decision, another six cards are dealt, bringing the total to 14 cards per player. At this point, "Grand Tichu" can no longer be called, but players can still opt for "Tichu," a 100-point bet on being the first to go out. The key differences between these bets are the timing of the call, the number of cards seen, and the points at stake.
Following the complete distribution of cards, players enter the exchange phase, where each player must pass one card face down to each of the other three players, receiving three cards in return.
The gameplay begins with the player holding the Mah Jong card leading the first trick. Players can play various combinations, such as single cards, pairs, sequences, full houses, and bombs, with each combination needing to be topped by a higher-value combination of the same type. The player who wins the trick leads the next one, and play continues until a team's two members have no cards left, ending the round. If one player remains with cards, they incur a penalty, transferring their hand to the opposing team's won tricks and their won tricks to the first player to go out.
The game concludes when a team achieves or surpasses the agreed-upon point total.
