Destiny 2's Ikora Recast, Bungie Rehires Original VA

Bungie has announced plans to re-record portions of Destiny 2's dialogue to bring back original voice performances for fan-favorite characters like Vanguard leader Ikora Rey.

When The Edge of Fate expansion launched as part of the Year of Prophecy content, players were quick to notice Ikora Rey's voice had changed. The character, originally voiced by Gina Torres, now sounded suspiciously similar to Savathun from The Witch Queen - because both roles were being performed by Debra Wilson.

While Bungie had warned players back in May about upcoming voice recasts for Orin, Chioma and Ikora, a July 15 update confirmed the studio is now re-recording dialogue with the original actors. "We're actively re-recording lines for affected characters now that scheduling conflicts have been resolved," Bungie stated, though no specific timeline was given beyond "a future update."

Until these changes roll out, players may encounter temporary voice replacements or even silent scenes - similar to Destiny 2: Heresy, where dialogue was subtitled but not voiced.

The timing lines up with the recent resolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike over AI protections, though Bungie didn't directly comment on this connection. The labor dispute began in July 2024 when negotiations between the actors' union and major game companies (including Activision, EA and WB Games) broke down, with 98% of members voting to strike.

Looking ahead, Destiny 2 players have plenty to anticipate with the Year of Prophecy. Bungie's roadmap shows two paid expansions plus two major free updates - marking the first time the game will deliver four significant content drops in a single year.

Meanwhile, Bungie's Marathon reboot faces an uncertain future after its indefinite delay last month. The decision came following player feedback and controversy surrounding alleged plagiarized content discovered during alpha testing. Many are now speculating about how these challenges might reshape the studio's direction.
