New screenshots have surfaced for Everwild, the long-anticipated fantasy game that was in development for over a decade before Xbox canceled it this summer.
Everwild was being developed by Rare, the storied British studio behind Sea of Thieves, known for its catalog of classic titles. However, this protracted project was terminated in July as part of a broader wave of layoffs and cancellations across Microsoft.
A series of previously unseen Everwild screenshots has now appeared online, sourced from the portfolio of a former employee. According to MP1st, these images are believed to depict a build of the game "relatively close to its cancellation," showing a silver-haired protagonist exploring ancient ruins within a forest.
While earlier teaser trailers offered brief glimpses, Rare had been notoriously secretive about Everwild's actual gameplay. These new screenshots, however, provide some clues. An inventory screen reveals an extensive list of items organized into specific tabs.
The displayed inventory sections include "favorites," "figments," "tools," "mosaics," "seeds," and "plants." The "figments" appear to be small, plant-like creatures—somewhat reminiscent of Pikmin, but with distinctive onion-shaped heads. One pale green creature is labeled a "Light Figment," with other variants shown in blue, white, and brown.
The game's detailed seed compendium features items like the "Shrub Seed," used for growing shrubs. Meanwhile, the "mosaics" category includes creatures spotted in prior teasers, such as a deer-like animal with a prominent orange crest.

A settings menu is also visible, which reportedly would have utilized player data from Sea of Thieves to recommend common gameplay configurations.
Everwild was envisioned as a third-person fantasy adventure with god-game elements, though its development saw significant changes, including a full reboot after creative director Simon Woodroffe's departure in 2020. Rare appointed veteran designer Gregg Mayles, known for his work on Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, and Sea of Thieves, to take the directorial reins. Mayles is now believed to have left the studio entirely following Everwild's cancellation.
So, what is next for Rare? Beyond the ongoing support for Sea of Thieves, the studio's future projects remain unclear. A recent Community Direct broadcast confirmed the developer is heavily committed to its pirate live-service title, with plans to update it for several more years. A new revenue stream for the game is also planned for early 2026, introducing a paid subscription for unlocking custom servers.
