It seems Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet might provide players with far greater freedom compared to the studio’s earlier ventures. Multiple reports suggest that the developers found inspiration in Elden Ring, intending to incorporate comparable mechanics tied to open-world exploration.

According to journalist Ben Hanson, the game will take place on a solitary massive planet, allowing players to unravel the enigmas of a lost civilization and delve into a novel religion, central to its narrative. While specifics remain uncertain regarding how closely it adheres to the conventional open-world framework, it’s clear the team is shifting away from the linear progression typical of their prior releases.

In The Heretic Prophet, players will embark on their journey independently, devoid of companions or allies—a first for the studio. As Neil Druckmann highlights, the aim is to evoke a feeling of isolation within an uncharted cosmos while exploring profound themes of belief and faith. Set in an alternate future on the isolated planet Sempiria, which has been disconnected from the galaxy for over six centuries, the storyline follows bounty hunter Jordan Moon on her mission.

Druckmann further notes that the game’s creation was influenced by titles like Half-Life 2 and Monkey Island. This hints at a potential shift from straightforward clues toward narratives where players must piece together fragments of the tale themselves.

Announced at The Game Awards 2024, the title doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date.
