In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, developers at Sucker Punch shared new information about the upcoming standalone sequel to the Ghost series. Ghost of Yotei builds on the success of the critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima, by introducing deeper layers of gameplay and narrative.

Creative Director Jason Cornell stated that the game offers unprecedented freedom in gameplay and features the studio's largest maps to date. He explained that instead of guiding players linearly toward the main objective, players can independently locate the members of the Yotei Six and take on the challenge of avenging them.

Last week, Sucker Punch announced the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei alongside a new trailer titled "The Onryō’s List," which presented story snippets and gameplay footage. The trailer introduced the protagonist, Atsu, and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six for the loss of her family.

Expanded Arsenal of Melee Weapons

Beyond exploration, players will enjoy greater freedom in weapon selection. Speculation from the latest trailer suggested an expanded arsenal for Atsu, which Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed in the same interview. In addition to the samurai sword, players can wield an odachi (Japanese long sword), a chain sickle, dual swords, and a spear.

Fox noted that the sword remains the primary weapon, while other weapons can be learned from various teachers and masters encountered throughout the story and open world.

He also mentioned that, unlike the previous game which centered on samurai honor, protagonist Atsu is not bound by such codes as she is not traditionally considered a samurai. Her combat style is unrestricted, allowing her to use anything available on the battlefield. For instance, if an enemy drops a weapon, Atsu can pick it up and throw it at other foes. Fox clarified, "This is limited to certain weapons, however. Not every enemy or weapon is viable, but if you can manage it, you're free to use it."

Explore the Setting of Ezo

Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603 around Mount Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido). According to Cornell, this location provides "a stage that balances a lawless, insecure environment with the danger hidden within nature's beauty."

The game will also represent the Ainu culture and its people, an indigenous group from Japan's northern regions. The development team visited Hokkaido to conduct thorough research, visiting museums and consulting experts on Ainu culture. Cornell was deeply impressed by Hokkaido's majestic, nature-rich landscapes, inspiring the team to recreate this setting for a global audience.

Its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima, was highly praised by Japanese critics for its respectful depiction of Japanese culture and history. The developers aim to maintain this standard with Ghost of Yotei, capturing the "dangers lurking within Ezo's magnificent wilderness."

Ghost of Yōtei launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. For the latest updates on the game, check out our article below.
