GTA 6 Delay Not Surprising, Rockstar's History Shows Delays Common

Author : Evelyn Jun 16,2025

Delays are often frustrating, but they're not always a bad thing. In the world of game development, taking extra time can lead to a much more polished and memorable experience. Some of the most iconic games in history were delayed—not because of negligence, but because the developers wanted to ensure every detail was perfect. Think about how many times you've played through a rushed release and thought, "This could have been so much better with just a little more time." That's exactly why delays matter.

Take GTA 6, for example—it’s been delayed, and honestly, that might be the best news for fans. Rockstar Games has a long-standing reputation for prioritizing quality over deadlines. Much like Nintendo, they belong to an elite group of studios that understand greatness takes time. When Rockstar says a game needs more polish, players should take it as a sign that something truly special is coming.

I’ve followed the *Grand Theft Auto* series from its earliest days—back when four-player LAN parties on PC were the pinnacle of chaos. I’ve played everything from the obscure (London 1969) to the legendary (GTA V), and even the underrated gem (Chinatown Wars). Over the years, one trend has remained consistent: these games are almost always late—and almost always incredible. Let’s take a look at the history of GTA delays and see just how much patience has paid off.

Grand Theft Auto III

The original entry that redefined open-world gaming faced a delay due to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Rockstar’s New York offices were close to Ground Zero, and Take-Two quickly decided to push back the release. Marketing VP Terry Donovan explained the decision:

"Our decision is based on two factors, firstly it has been a little difficult to get work done in downtown Manhattan... and secondly we felt that a full content review... was absolutely necessary."

Beyond logistical issues, some references and gameplay scenarios were no longer appropriate in the wake of such devastation. Though only minor changes were made, delaying the release was a respectful and smart move. Blasting ambulances and police cars in Liberty City just weeks after 9/11 wouldn't have sat well with anyone.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Both titles shared the shortest delay in the franchise’s history—just seven days. For Vice City, Rockstar needed additional time to manufacture enough discs to meet demand following the massive success of GTA III. San Andreas received a similar week-long extension, allowing the team to refine what would become one of the most expansive and beloved entries in the series.

While handheld entries usually hit shelves on time, Vice City Stories was pushed back by two weeks in North America and even longer in parts of Europe. Meanwhile, Chinatown Wars—the best GTA ever made (fight me!)—landed two months later than expected. But when it finally released, critics raved. Unfortunately, low sales meant no sequel… yet another reason why good games sometimes deserve more time.

Grand Theft Auto IV

After GTA III revolutionized gaming, expectations for GTA IV were sky-high. Moving beyond RenderWare and into the next generation brought huge technical challenges. Rockstar Leeds needed several extra months to fully realize their vision.

"The new consoles are allowing us to create the Grand Theft Auto game we always dreamed about... As always, our goal is to surpass even the wildest expectations."

That extra time allowed them to craft one of the most immersive experiences of the seventh console generation.

Grand Theft Auto V

Originally slated for spring 2013, GTA V was pushed back to September. Rockstar acknowledged the disappointment but assured fans the wait would be worth it:

"GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require."

And they were right. GTA V went on to become the best-selling console game of all time—a masterpiece built on patience and precision.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Though not part of the GTA series, RDR2 deserves mention. It was delayed twice—first in spring 2017, then again in February 2018. Rockstar once again emphasized the need for polish:

"We require a little extra time for polish... We sincerely thank you for your patience."

What arrived was a landmark achievement in storytelling and world-building—an unforgettable journey that justified every delay.

So if you're disappointed about GTA 6 being postponed, remember: this is Rockstar’s tradition. Delays mean dedication to quality. And when the game finally arrives, it will almost certainly be one of the greatest ever made. See you in Vice City.
