Path of Exile 2 Devs Stand Firm on Challenging Endgame
The developers of Path of Exile 2 are steadfast in their defense of the game's demanding endgame, despite vocal concerns from the player base. Co-director Jonathan Rogers emphasized the importance of player progression and readiness, stating, "If you’re dying all the time, then you’re probably not ready to keep going up the power curve." This statement underlines the philosophy behind the game's endgame design, which is meant to test players thoroughly as they navigate the complex Atlas of Worlds.
Path of Exile 2, a sequel to the beloved 2013 game, has introduced a revamped skill system featuring 240 active skill gems and 12 character classes. After players complete the six-act storyline, they unlock access to 100 endgame maps, each presenting formidable challenges. Since its early access launch in December 2024, the isometric action RPG has seen a robust player base, and the year ahead promises significant quality-of-life enhancements. The first update of 2025, Patch 0.1.0, tackles various bugs and crashes, especially on the PlayStation 5, and improves gameplay mechanics related to monsters, skills, and damage.
In a recent interview with content creators Darth Microtransaction and GhazzyTV, co-directors Mark Roberts and Jonathan Rogers discussed the upcoming Patch 0.1.1 and shared their views on the endgame's difficulty. They defended the challenging nature of the endgame, arguing that "the whole 'death actually mattering' thing is actually important. You have to have some level of failure being possible." They believe that altering the design, such as reverting to a single portal system, would fundamentally change the game's feel. Players have previously expressed frustration over the endgame's intensity, which is characterized by fast monsters and the need for robust, strategic builds.
Regarding the loss of experience points (EXP) during an Atlas run, Rogers explained that this mechanic "is keeping you in the place where you’re supposed to be." The team at Grinding Gear Games is actively reviewing the various elements that contribute to the endgame's difficulty, aiming to preserve the most authentic experience for players. Despite the availability of advanced tips—such as conquering high-Waystone Tier maps, salvaging Quality gear, and strategically using portals—many fans remain frustrated with the steep challenge.
The endgame content of Path of Exile 2 is set within the Atlas of Worlds, where players unlock maps and battle Beasts. Access to the Atlas is granted upon completing the main campaign on Cruel Difficulty. Each world within the Atlas is designed for advanced players, featuring high-level challenges, formidable bosses, intricate maps, and the need to optimize builds through gear and skill enhancements.
